An exceptional and highly sought-after example of late 19th-century French barbotine, this rare asparagus service from Fives Lille captures the artistry and charm of naturalistic ceramic design.
The platter is richly decorated with sculptural artichokes and flowing foliage, rendered in soft, nuanced glazes that bring depth and movement to the piece. At its center rests the original removable drainer, beautifully modeled as a bundle of white asparagus tied with a ribbon, complete with perforations for proper serving.
Both functional and decorative, this piece embodies the elegance of French dining traditions of the period, where presentation was as important as cuisine.
Dating to circa 1890, this is a rare and complete example, increasingly difficult to find with its original drainer intact. It has the number 1305 stamped on the back.
A true statement piece for collectors of French majolica, barbotine, or vegetable-themed ceramics.
This platter is described in detail in the specialist book on Asparagus Dishes by Maryse Bottero.
